Sustainable Finance - Shaping the Future

Under the motto "Shaping the Future" we, together with the CFA Society Austria, invited to the Sustainable Finance Conference in the PwC headquarters in Vienna's DC Tower on January 25th. High above the rooftops of Vienna, ESG experts from various industries and market segments shared and exchanged approaches, perspectives and ideas on the subject of sustainability.

We would like to thank the great speakers, partners and participants who made this event a success! Adam Lessing, proven ESG expert and author of books and articles on the topic, was guiding the audience as conference chairman through this afternoon. Adam has a long career in Investment Banking and Investment Management and is currently Boardmember of LGT Austria and member of the LGT European ESG Expert committee.

The core motivation for this conference was clearly the urgency of the issue. The underlying idea was to bring people together to exchange ideas and approaches, because the world is showing us very impressively that sustainability in our actions is necessary in order to be able to shape the future sustainably. Also, or especially in the financial sector, which plays an absolutely key role, a paradigm shift is announced.

Sustainability in practice: It's all about data...

As the first speaker, Philipp Gaggl, Director, ESG & Sustainability Consulting at PwC Austria, presented perspectives from ESG management and reporting from the economy. He pointed out challenges, discussed best practice examples and brought the audience closer to questions that companies addressing to the financial sector.

James Lockhart-Smith, Verisk Maplecroft's Head of Markets & VP, spoke about impact investing at the sovereign level, while Peter Hafez, Ravenpack's Chief Data Scientist, provided the audience with insights into the potential of Language AI in real-time monitoring of ESG controversies.

ESG integration: different challenges in frontier markets, listed equities and private markets

Ahead of the networking coffee break, Global Evolution Director of Research Ole Jorgensen presented the challenges of ESG integration in frontier markets. After the short break, Coline Pavot, Head of Responsible Investment Research at LFDE, devoted her short workshop to impact investing in the liquid, listed equity universe. As a "counterbalance", Christian Czernich, CEO & Co-Founder of Round2Capital, then explained the possibilities and challenges of ESG integration on private markets.

Panel discussion: The data question as a common thread

As part of the concluding panel discussion with all speakers, the different perspectives and the highlights of the afternoon were worked out in a great way by conference chairman and panel moderator Adam Lessing. The main topic in the lively panel debate was the data situation: "How do we get reliable and up-to-date data to make our ESG decisions?"
